How to Volunteer at the UNM Herbarium

The Herbarium has truly limitless volunteer opportunities...

Who can volunteer?

  • people 14 or older
  • college students exploring opportunities in biology
  • artists looking to engage in new crafts
  • retirees looking to try something new (we love retired botanists too!)
  • high school students fulfilling internship requirements
  • everybody!

What is there to do?

  • process incoming herbarium specimens
  • mounting specimens
  • filing specimens
  • imaging specimens
  • refrence library organization
  • enter specimen data into our online database
  • and maybe even help with fieldwork!

How much time should I volunteer?

  • we request a minimum of 3 hour shifts
  • our staff is available to work with volunteers Monday through Friday, 9am - 5pm
  • volunteers should set up a regular schedule, within the above time constraints
  • we are lucky to have you, so talk to us and we can work with you

How do I get started?

  • contact the collections manager
  • if you have never visited the herbarium before, we’ll arrange a time for you to stop by and get a feel for what we do
  • we start most volunteers new to the herbarium with learning how to mount dried plant specimens
  • after that, you will learn as you go!
